Garner's Fall Runs on Three Calendars, and Each One Has Its Own Rhythm

October 1, 2026

White Deer Park's paved trail loops past the splash pad, cuts through the arboretum, and crosses Buffaloe Road into Lake Benson Park before looping back, 3.4 miles in all. Walk it on a Saturday morning in October and you'll pass dog walkers, stroller pushers, and the same handful of runners training for something. A few miles south on Benson Road, a different kind of fall is underway: six acres of corn cut into two and a half miles of paths, now in its 27th season. The two traditions sit less than ten minutes apart by car. They've never once appeared on the same flyer.

Each tradition has its own organizer, and that shapes how Garner's fall unfolds.

Two Parks, One Trail, and the Town's Own Calendar

White Deer Park and Lake Benson Park are connected on purpose. The Town of Garner built the trail between them as a single loop, a mix of paved and gravel path that lets a walker start at the White Deer Park Nature Center, pass the splash pad and arboretum, cross into Lake Benson's open fields and Veterans Memorial, and come back without retracing a step. It's the kind of infrastructure that only makes sense if you assume people will use both parks as one system, and residents do.

The Town leans into that connection every fall with Trick-or-Treat the Trails, a Halloween event that turns the paved loop into a one-mile trick-or-treating route, with free parking at Lake Benson Park and a marked, accessible crossing to White Deer Park for anyone who needs it. The Town of Garner's own site has confirmed the 2026 date as October 3, calling it a beloved tradition that returns every year.

This is Parks and Recreation programming in the fullest sense: town-run, free, built around the physical trail the department already maintains. If you think of "Garner's fall calendar" as a single list, this is the part of it that actually comes from the town.

Down Benson Road, a Family Farm Runs Its Own Season

Ken's Korny Corn Maze is not part of that system. It sits on the property of Ken's Produce at 3175 Benson Road, a business that traces back to 1970, when a young Ken Walker started selling produce out of the back of his father's pickup truck. His mother Alice eventually built a small produce stand at the end of the driveway. The stand grew into a full garden center in 1998, and the following year Walker cut the first paths into a cornfield, calling it North Carolina's first corn maze.

Now in its 27th season, the maze is still Walker's own operation, not the town's. It runs on Ken's Produce's own seasonal hours, mid-September through mid-November, with a children's maze, a rope maze, hay rides, and a corn crib alongside the main attraction. Walker has told local reporters that he originally gave the idea two or three years to prove itself. It's outlasted that estimate by a wide margin.

The distinction matters more than it sounds like it should. Ask a longtime resident where to take out-of-town guests for a fall afternoon and White Deer Park and Ken's often end up on the same short list, as if they're run by the same people. They're not. One is municipal infrastructure. The other is a third-generation family farm that happens to sit close enough to feel like part of the same outing.

Main Street Keeps a Different Clock

Downtown Garner runs on a third schedule entirely, managed not by the town or a private farm but by the Downtown Garner Association, the nonprofit behind the district's Main Street America accreditation. Its fall programming skews toward evenings rather than daylight hours, and toward food and music rather than trails and hay rides.

The Association's marquee fall event, originally planned for earlier in the season, has been rescheduled to November 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. It combines three events into one night: a Trick-or-Eat Food Truck Rodeo, Garner Night Out, and Touch-a-Truck, with costumes encouraged for trick-or-treating straight down Main Street. The food truck lineup announced by the Association includes All on Top Dogz, Bundts by Brenee, Greek on Wheels, Island Flavour, Mama's y Papa's, and Monique's Rollin' Stove.

Earlier in the fall, the Garner Performing Arts Center hosts Carnaval Latino, a free September festival celebrating the town's Latino community with music, food, and craft booths from local artists and businesses. And on a smaller, weekly scale, Downtown Garner runs its own version of a standing fall ritual: a Tuesday evening run club out of Zin Yoga & Wine Lounge, offering a 2 or 4 mile route followed by a yoga cool-down and drinks at the lounge afterward.

None of this overlaps with the Parks and Recreation calendar or with Ken's Produce hours. It's a separate rhythm, built by a separate organization, for a downtown that operates on its own clock.

Three Organizers, Three Schedules

Put the three together and a pattern emerges that doesn't show up if you only follow one of them. Garner's fall isn't a single unified season with one events page. It's three separate systems, each with its own organizer, own audience, and own sense of what "fall in Garner" means:

The Town of Garner runs the parks system: free, daytime-leaning, built around the White Deer Park and Lake Benson Park trail loop.

Ken's Produce runs the farm: paid, weekend-heavy, entirely independent of any town department.

The Downtown Garner Association runs Main Street: evening-leaning, food and music focused, funded and staffed separately from both of the above.

Each of the three publishes its own schedule where its own audience looks. A resident who wants the full picture can check garnernc.gov for the parks calendar, Ken's Produce directly for maze hours, and downtowngarner.com for Main Street events.

How to Actually Catch All of It

A town parks department, a family farm, and a Main Street nonprofit have different missions and different budgets, and each does its part well on its own terms. Catching the full season means pulling from all three. Bookmark the Town's events page for the trail-based programming, check Ken's Produce directly before a maze trip since hours shift by day of the week, and follow Downtown Garner's own site or its social accounts for anything happening after dark on Main Street. Treat them as three separate subscriptions, not one feed, and Garner's fall stops feeling scattered and starts feeling like exactly what it is: a town with three different institutions each hosting its own piece of the season.

If a season like this is part of what makes Garner feel like home to you, and you're weighing what a move within town or into it might look like, Jamie Buckley knows this stretch of Wake County well enough to talk through it neighborhood by neighborhood.
